The ResearchSpace objective is to make semantic processing accessible for all scholars and institutions - large and small. This means support for knowledge representation separated from technical components so that subject experts can participate in representing their knowledge digitally, automated processing of semantics for practical applications and the ability to support different types of application for different audiences.  

Step 1 - Map data - supported by 3M (Mapping Memory Manager)


The 3M system allows non-technical subject experts to create CIDOC CRM mappings, this means;

  • the quality of knowledge representation is significantly improved. 
  • the potential of reuse is significantly increased.
  • the contextual information can be used for different audiences and applications.
  • the data is contextualised for research and ready for knowledge building.
  • the data supports more interesting relationships for education and engagement.

Step 2 - Determine and Apply Fundamental Categories and Relationships

New data is abstracted (automatically) into another semantic layer called Fundamental Categories (Things, Actors, Places, Events, Time, Concepts) & Relationships - a matrix of relationships between these categories. These are called FCs and FRs and mean that;

  • any CIDOC CRM dataset can be accessed through the same interface.
  • applications are more robust and sustainable.
  • the underlying semantics are not lost.
  • The process provides institutions with a good indication about the richness of their data and whether changes are required.


Step 3 - Apply to Applications 
The User Interface can be designed in different ways and development time is reduced using Semantic development platforms like the Metaphacts platform. It can be more specialised or broader and use more imagery. In particular:

  • Only FCs and FRs that actually exist are displayed.
  • New FRs can be defined to reflect particular cultural heritage specialisms or to make user interfaces more intuitive for general audiences.
  • The labels can be changed as required. 
  • The UI can be image rich for engagement or more textual for specialists - or a combination of the two. 

Step 4 - We bundle our open software into Docker for easy deployment using the Metaphacts Semantic platform and SYSTAP Blazegraph
